Protecting the Enamel on Your Teeth

Noah Harrison

If you experience jolts of pain when you drink a cold beverage or bite into a sugary snack, you are most likely suffering from tooth sensitivity issues. Sensitivity occurs when the outer layer of your teeth, the enamel, is worn away. The dentin layer underneath is full of nerve endings. When this is exposed, sensitive spots are prominent. Unfortunately, once enamel is worn away, it is gone to stay. Here are a few tips to follow to help you avoid losing your important enamel layer.

Change Your Brushing Routine

When you brush your teeth, you may be going about the routine in the same manner each time you pull out your toothbrush. Rubbing the surfaces of your teeth exactly in the same way each day can wear down the enamel layer rather quickly. Make a conscious effort to brush from side-to-side one day and in an up-and-down motion the next. Start on the left side of your mouth one day and the right side the next. Switching the direction you move your toothbrush across your teeth can help keep your enamel intact, protecting your teeth against sensitive spots as a result.

Watch What You Eat

Acidic foods wear away enamel when they are present on the surface of your teeth often or for an extended period. Avoid eating citrus, pickles, tea, and similar high-acidic foods and drinks. If you do consume something acidic, make sure to brush your teeth as soon as you can afterward so the remnants are removed from your teeth, minimizing the damage they can do.

Take a Trip to the Dentist

Often sensitivity occurs when there is a problem with your gums. The enamel layer of teeth can be worn away due to bacteria near the gum line. If you suffer from gingivitis or periodontal disease, you most likely also suffer from sensitivity. Make sure to follow a strict oral hygiene routine to keep your teeth and gums healthy and see your dentist regularly for cleanings so if there is a problem it will be found and repaired promptly.

Use Whitening Products Sparingly

While whitening products do a great job at cosmetically repairing yellowing teeth, they also strip the teeth of their protective enamel layer. Make sure to read instructions on these products carefully before using them and try to limit the exposure they have to your teeth so the enamel is not worn away. If you wish to have your teeth whitened, consider going to a dentist like Mannarino Gary Dr to have them bleached professionally so your dentist can help keep your enamel protected during the process.
